In the Early Morning Hours

Early one morning
as I opened my eyes
I thought I'd go out
to see the sun rise.

The world was still dark,
the air had a sting,
that lovely cool freshness
you'd expect from spring.

I didn't see a daffodil,
no tulips to be had,
nor crocuses or hyacinths
but I was not sad.

The humble little flowers,
the ones you hardly know,
were out blooming gaily
and put on quite a show.

Whole beds of color,
pink and yellow and white,
hugged every tree
and filled me with delight.

The time went by quickly
the sun began to shine,
I bid 'good day' to the flowers
and went to start mine.
