Five reasons I'm giving Five Stars to:
Murder in Park Lane
by Karen Charlton:
1. The Setting: The book, a historical
murder mystery, unfolds in 1812.
It is not too rich in historical detail but it is
nice to see that things could still get done
without computers, cell-phones and that all
important DNA testing.
2. The Protagonist: Stephen Lavender, a
Principal Officer at Bow Street, is
considered 'the best policeman in England.'
The nicest thing about him is his relationship
with his sidekick, constable Woods.
3. The Gentleness: For when you've had your
fill of violence and gore, and want no more.
4. The Plot: A body is found in a fashionable
address in Mayfair. I'm saying no more.

5. The Best Part: I couldn't really tell
who did it. Isn't it awful when you work
it out half-way through the book and then
have to wait for the detective to catch up?

True! I hate finding out too early...once found out reading the chapters. That was a clever turn of phrase...”...have to wait for the detective to catch up.”

Yes, figuring out who done it too early takes the fun out of it. I've read some that j thought I knew and in the end was totally surprised that it was someone I never suspected

ReplyDeleteI love your sachets! Lavender smells so wonderful! I have a small lavender and peppermint sachet hanging in my closet and I love going in there just to smell the sachet! Thank you for the book recommendation. I get tired of the gore in books and on TV and am always looking for something with a good story but without all of the horrid violence! Have a great weekend! ReplyDeleteYour sachets are amazing! The second one (left to right) reminds me of almost an identical one I made for my Flower Basket Pillow when I was about 9 or 10. Still have that pillow! :)

ReplyDeleteI like this twist on your usual verses. I am not a big fan of reading murder mysteries but I do enjoy a TV series made in Australia by Every Cloud Productions of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries based on the novels by Kerry Greenwood. The thing I love most is not so much the murder mysteries but the attitude of the protagonist and the wonderfully irreverent portrayal of her by Essie Davis. The wonderful costumery of the 1920s is highlighted in this series and it is a joy.
ReplyDeleteI love Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries as well! Who can resist the gorgeous settings and costumes and the casting is great as well. I just heard this week that it is coming back but a few decades later and with Miss Fisher's niece taking the lead.

ReplyDeleteOh, and if you like this book you might also like the William Monk series by Anne Perry. It's a police/detective series that takes place in Victorian England.

DeleteI can second that recommendation ..... the series is great! I’ve been working my way through it via my local library but it’s getting harder to get the books as I’m not the only one reading the series and they seem to only have one copy of each book in the county. The series gives a fascinating insight into Victorian life.

That new series has been screening in Australia but I haven't had a chance to see it because it is not in the best time slot for my routine. I understand the last episode is screening this week - that's just my luck. By the time I think to watch something it always ends up being the last episode or I keep finding the same episode every time the series comes around! I hear the new Miss Fisher set in the 60s is very good although we were scratching our heads about the generation gap and the decade. We thought the niece would be more likely to be in the 50s or maybe the 40s but we haven't read the novels so who knows! It's all fun.
