In the whole house
there was one cat only,
and it cannot be denied
that he was bit lonely.
Playing by himself
bored him no end,
he really would have liked
at least one friend.
In the basement there lived
a family of mice,
but they all smelled of cheese
and didn't seem that nice.
In the dusty attic nested
a lovely white dove,
but she was always cooing
about harmony and love.
The neighbors next door
had a grey old poodle,
but he was slow and lazy
and really liked strudel.
The cat dismissed them all
with scorn and a huff,
as far as friends went
there weren't good enough.
And then he realized
all on his own -
if you're gonna be picky
you'll end up alone.
